Over 30 years of research

Forests work best when they are diverse. 

Research consistently shows that forests with a mix of tree species, ages, and structures support greater biodiversity and resilience. Young forests, mature stands, conserved areas, wetlands, and working forests each play a role. No single forest type benefits every species at every stage of its life cycle, but together, a diverse landscape creates more habitat and stronger ecosystems. 

Forests can support both nature and people. 

Decades of research show that well‑managed working forests can provide wildlife habitat, store carbon, protect water, and produce renewable forest products. Science helps identify where to conserve, when to adapt forestry practices, and how to reduce impacts, so forests can continue to support ecological health and the communities that rely on them. 

Long‑term research leads to better decisions. 

Forests change slowly, making snapshot observations less informative. Long‑term, real‑world studies, especially those that track conditions before and after forest management, provide insights that short‑term research cannot. This work helps challenge assumptions, improve planning, and adapt practices as conditions and knowledge evolve. 

Strong partnerships make better science possible. 

Much of what we know comes from collaboration with universities, independent researchers, and conservation partners. These partnerships strengthen the quality, credibility, and relevance of research—helping ensure findings are robust, transparent, and useful over the long term.
