Spruce Budworm Defense 

The native Eastern Spruce Budworm is the most destructive threat to forests in this region. The insect feeds on fir and spruce. Left unchecked, outbreaks cause widespread tree mortality, devastate wood supply, and increase fire risk. They happen naturally every 30 to 40 years and can last a decade. 

The old approach was reactive—wait for the outbreak, then treat millions of acres year after year. That meant 1 to 3 million acres treated annually during past outbreaks. More area, more cost, more impact. 

The new approach is different. Then in 2014, we took a new approach in New Brunswick as a founding member of the Healthy Forest Partnership. This collaboration uses a science-based, early intervention strategy.  Monitor constantly. Detect early. Treat small, targeted areas before populations explode.

Over ten years, that's meant treating only 1.6 million total acres (or less than 160,000 acres a year) —a fraction of what the old method required. Better results, less treatment.

The success in New Brunswick led to knowledge sharing with Maine. We're part of the Maine Budworm Response Coalition, helping implement the same strategy there. In 2025, the first large-scale application treated 240,000 acres in Northern Maine. Follow-up monitoring found 95 per cent fewer pests in the treated areas. It worked. 

Beyond treatment, we build in natural defenses. Through our tree improvement program, we plant locally adapted spruce and pine—species less susceptible to budworm than naturally regenerating balsam fir. 

And there's the endophyte work. Research with Carleton University identified a specific fungus that naturally produces anti-insect toxins. We've treated more than 250 million planted seedlings with these endophytes to date.
