Biodiversity Monitoring: A view into the forest.
Understanding the forest also means understanding the wildlife it supports.  That’s why our Forest Pulse initiative includes the creation of a dedicated biodiversity monitoring program. Built from the ground up, this pioneering and innovative work will provide insights at a scale not previously possible.
Across our landscape, we are tracking birds and mammals over time as indicators of forest health. What shows up, where it settles, how it moves—those patterns tell you how the forest is doing.
We have deployed over 500 monitors, placed across different forest types—young stands, mature forests, and everything in between.
- 250+ acoustic sound recorders to capture bird songs
- 250+ research cameras to monitor for species like deer, moose, lynx, and marten.
This monitoring network is unique in size and improves ecological data at an unprecedented scale and time horizon. 55 terabytes of audio and video recordings will be collected annually.
For context: just the bird songs for one season, would take a person 6.5 years to listen to– non-stop, 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
We use automated classifiers to sort through what the cameras and recorders capture. Software trained to identify species, recognize patterns, turn raw footage into information we can learn from.
The footage offers a window into places few people reach. It shows who lives here, how different forest conditions support them season to season, and where our management matters most.
We share what we learn. Universities, government agencies, conservation groups, other monitoring networks—collaboration strengthens the work. Third-party validation makes the findings transparent. Shared infrastructure makes the program sustainable.
The goal is straightforward: measure biodiversity, understand impact, plan better. When you know what's working and what isn't, you can adapt.
